Optimizely vs LaunchDarkly 2026 - Experimentation Depth vs Flag Depth, Priced Honestly

Optimizely is the experimentation pioneer with hidden pricing. LaunchDarkly is the flag standard with an MAU trap. Both are excellent and expensive. Here's which one fits which team.

Published:

Pitting Optimizely against LaunchDarkly is a comparison between two category leaders that lead in different categories. Optimizely popularized modern web experimentation; LaunchDarkly set the standard for enterprise feature management. Both are genuinely excellent at what they’re built for, both are expensive, and both make you talk to sales to find out how expensive. The question isn’t which is better - it’s which kind of depth you’re actually buying.

Facts here come straight from each tool page.

Where Optimizely wins: the experimentation is first-class

Optimizely is where modern web experimentation was popularized, and the stats engine still shows it. Feature Experimentation runs A/B tests through a stats engine that decides significance for you, so you’re not eyeballing p-values. Reviewers describe it as fast, flexible and developer-friendly. Evaluation is local and in process - the SDKs decide flags sub-millisecond, in your own process, not over a network call - across around 12 to 13 language SDKs. If serious A/B testing is your center of gravity, few tools match the depth.

The free Rollouts tier is a real on-ramp: unlimited flags plus controlled rollouts and targeting, capped at one experiment at a time, aimed at startups.

The gotchas are two. First, Optimizely publishes no paid price at all - every paid plan is a custom annual contract quoted on your MAU, traffic and modules. The only external anchor is Vendr’s marketplace data: a median contract around $78,000/yr ranging $31,500 to $199,435 across 109 logged buyers, and that covers the wider suite, not Feature Experimentation alone - directional, not a quote. Second, today’s Optimizely is a large PE-owned digital-experience platform - the original raised around $264M, was acquired by Episerver in 2020, which renamed itself Optimizely, and Episerver is owned by Insight Partners, which bought it in 2018 at a $1.16B valuation. Feature flags are one product inside a big suite, and reviewers flag a steep learning curve finding where things live.

Where LaunchDarkly wins: the deepest flag tooling in the category

LaunchDarkly is the enterprise feature-management standard, and nobody seriously disputes the capability. It has the deepest flag tooling available: advanced targeting, around 38 SDKs across server, client and edge, and guarded releases that automatically roll back when a metric goes bad - genuinely best-in-class, and most competitors don’t match it. Seats are unlimited on every tier, so you’re never taxed for adding a developer. Its G2 score is 4.5 across 681 reviews, reflecting a product people trust at scale.

Unlike Optimizely, LaunchDarkly at least tells you the meters. The paid Foundation tier bills $10 per service connection per month plus $8.33 per 1,000 client-side MAU.

The gotcha is that MAU line, and it’s sharp. LaunchDarkly charges on your highest-volume context kind - a context can be a user, a device, an anonymous session. If you track 300,000 users and 500,000 devices, you pay for 500,000 MAU, the bigger number, even if you only ever target users. Add-ons stack fast - at 10M MAU they can exceed $33,700/mo, more than the base license - and renewals are the recurring horror story, reported at “double our current costs” on legacy plans. Vendr’s data puts the real median around $72,000/yr, ranging $19,500 to $165,700. Experimentation is gated to higher tiers and priced on top, so if experiments are your main goal, you’re paying for the flag depth to reach them.

Optimizely vs LaunchDarkly: which should you pick?

  • Experimentation is your core workflow and you want the proven stats engine - Optimizely, especially if you’re already on its platform for content or commerce. Start on the free Rollouts tier and run experiments before the sales conversation.
  • You need the deepest feature-flag tooling and progressive delivery - LaunchDarkly. The targeting depth, 38 SDKs and guarded releases with auto-rollback are unmatched.
  • You want a price you can partly budget from published meters - LaunchDarkly. Its usage math is at least visible; Optimizely shows you nothing until you ask.
  • You only want flags, not a whole platform - LaunchDarkly over Optimizely, because buying into a full digital-experience suite for toggles is a lot of surface area you won’t use.
  • Your device or anonymous-context counts are high - be careful with LaunchDarkly; the highest-volume-context-kind rule is where the estimate blows up.

The cheaper experimentation option worth knowing

Before you sign either six-figure contract, know that there’s a third route built experiment-first that flips the pricing model entirely. Statsig makes flag and config checks unlimited and free on every tier, and monetizes analytics events instead - the exact inverse of LaunchDarkly’s MAU model. Its experimentation engine, built by ex-Facebook engineers with sequential testing and CUPED, is genuinely strong, and Pro is a flat $150/mo, a predictable number in a category full of sales calls. The one asterisk is ownership - OpenAI acquired Statsig on 2 September 2025 for a reported ~$1.1 billion, so adopting it is a multi-year bet on a roadmap that now sits inside OpenAI. For an experimentation-led team unwilling to spend Optimizely or LaunchDarkly money, it’s the value pick.

Bottom line: Optimizely and LaunchDarkly are both best-in-class, just at different things. Buy Optimizely for experimentation depth and accept the fully hidden pricing; buy LaunchDarkly for flag depth and model your highest-volume context kind before you commit. And if the real driver is experimentation on a budget, Statsig undercuts both with the OpenAI-ownership caveat priced in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Optimizely or LaunchDarkly better for feature flags?

LaunchDarkly is the deeper flag platform. It has the deepest targeting, around 38 SDKs, and guarded releases that automatically roll back on a bad metric - genuinely best-in-class. Optimizely's flags sit inside an experimentation-first product where feature flags are one piece of a large digital-experience platform. If pure feature-flag depth is what you need, LaunchDarkly wins. If experimentation is your center of gravity, Optimizely's stats engine is the draw.

Which is more expensive, Optimizely or LaunchDarkly?

Both land in similar six-figure territory on real contracts, but neither publishes clear pricing. Vendr's third-party buyer data puts the median LaunchDarkly contract around $72,000 a year, ranging $19,500 to $165,700, and the median Optimizely contract around $78,000 a year, ranging $31,500 to $199,435. LaunchDarkly at least publishes its usage-based meters; Optimizely hides all paid pricing behind contact sales entirely.

Does Optimizely have a free tier like LaunchDarkly?

Both do. Optimizely's free Rollouts tier includes unlimited feature flags plus controlled rollouts and targeting, capped at one experiment at a time. LaunchDarkly's free Developer tier is $0 with unlimited seats, core targeting, and around 38 client SDKs. Both are genuine on-ramps, and both have a sales-led cliff to the paid product.

Can I self-host Optimizely or LaunchDarkly?

No, neither. Both are proprietary SaaS. Optimizely's language SDKs are open source on GitHub and evaluate flags locally in process, and LaunchDarkly's client SDKs are open source with a Relay Proxy on Enterprise, but neither platform backend can be run on your own infrastructure. If self-hosting is a hard requirement, look at Flagsmith or Unleash instead.
